ABD BSX 2009 race report

BSX has been set up as a one-on-one flat pedal race and fund raising event for the Royal Children's Hospital, run on a rest day during Track Attack to give the interstate and international riders something different to do. It's also well supported by Victorian's despite it being a normal working day. In 2009 we had a number of factors that would have an effect on the success of the event, the Australian Mountain Bike nationals, a new series in NSW that would mean that those riders wouldn't need to travel down to Victoria to get some racing in, and the absense of the UCI series round normally hosted in Melboure, but as they say "the show must go on".

For those who can't make it to the event we set up a webcam and with each year we've done our best to improve the view, but we had a last minute hitch and found that our network cable that runs from the house right through to the backyard no longer worked. The only option was a shorter cable that just extended to the rear of the house, which meant an obscured view with tents and people in the way. Once the temperatures started to rise we also had problems with the laptop that was running the webcam over heating and shutting down. Hopefully we'll be able to sort it out for next year and maybe even run two webcams with different views, but sorry to the guys and gals who tried to use it this year.

From early in the day the skies were blue and the sun was shining brightly, a big difference from prior BSX events where we had the track under covers to keep it dry. Considering how dry it had been through December and January the track was in great shape. I must say a special thanks to some hard work put in the day before by a small team headed up by Ronnie Guyers.

By the time the gates opened at 11 am we had a pretty good indication that there would be the numbers we needed for racing, the spectator numbers were a little down, but we expected that. A number of AA pro riders showed up who hadn't been racing Track Attack including former Junior Elite World Champion Mike Fenwick (ABD/Fox), Levi Collins and Shannon Rademaker. Former BMX racers Scott Lacey, Julian Millis and Ermin Deumic also showed up for the event.

Time Trials

The track held together well through the two hour practice session and was fast for the time trial.

The Open men's class was dominated by Victoria's country boys. Bendigo's Kyle Horton and Brock Tuckerman took the two fastest times for the day with Kyle clocking a 21.288 and Brock a 21.453. They were followed up by Tom Siinmaa, Levi Collins and Michael Fenwick who was flying but just a small slip cost him dearly. Scott Lacey and Connor Hunter finished sixth and eighth with A Pros Maddy Denholm, Scooby Guyers and Bodi Turner in seventh, nineth and tenth place respectably. Ziggy Callan and Charlie Web were racing against the guys as the only two females entered, Ziggy qualified twenty fifth and Charlie in twenty nineth. The little man Hayden Fletcher poured it on for the spectators in his timed run, boosting all the jumps but came unstuck in the second corner, he got right back up and got straight back into it.

The 30 & Over Open wheel was as entertaining as ever, Simon Anderson who had won the past two BSX events in the 30 & Over class pulled the fastest time with a 22.625 followed up by Jock Kelly, winner of the same class in 2006, in second with a time of 24.126. Shane Jenkins and Craig Walczuk both struggled with the second corner and it cost them. Jenkins narrowly qualfied for the elimination rounds while Walczuk wasn't so lucky.

Elimination Round 1

Some Open Men highlights:

• Brock Tuckerman (the #2 seed) narrowly avoided elimination by Kerrod Connors early when he slipped a pedal in the first straight, he pulled it all back together and managed to get his nose in front in the last straight.
• Everyone's favourite ranga Ethan Murray was the first victim of the track taking an early exit down the second straight allowing Maddy Denholm to take an easy ride to the line.
• Cohan Gooden also took a spill at the end of the second straight, racing against Bodi Turner, allowing Bodi to take the uncontested win.
• Chase Collins was giving Shannon Rademaker a run for his money until he dropped a pedal on the way out of the second corner, he made up some ground to apply pressure out of the last corner, but seemed to have a little pedal trouble again.

30 & Over Open wheel highlights:

• Simon Trewin pulled Simon Anderson in the first round and set a goal to make it the whole way around the track and keep out of the highlights reel for the DVD, only it appears he tried a little too hard and earned the best crash of the day, Trewin will have to wait another year.
• Julian Millis got the snap on Jock Kelly but Jock kept the power down and took the win.
• Shane Jenkins and Jamie Bullows put in a very tight race which looked like it would come right down to the wire until Bullows slid out on the last corner.

Elimination round 2

Open Men

• Jacob Price dropped in in the second corner while Levi Collins took it to the line.
• Ermin Deumic got off to a handy lead over Maddy Denholm but overcooked it in the first corner and couldn't make up ground.

Elimination round 3

Open Men

• Levi Collins and Connor Hunter go hard at it, Hunter got the snap but Collins had the corners dialled, coming out of the last corner Collins had the edge Hunter was giving his all until he dropped it ending his hopes to make the final.

Semi Finals

30 & Over

• Shane Jenkins and Simon Anderson off to an even start but Anderson's smooth riding style gives him the edge by the half way point. Jenkins keeps battling but gave away a bike length by the time they hit the line.
• Chris Van Winden and Jock Kelly looked like a good even match up, they hit the half way mark even, Van Winden took the last half a little too cautiously and Kelly took advantage and took the win.

Open Men

• Tom Siinmaa and Kyle Horton was always going to be a good match up, they were head to head the whole way until the last corner where Horton took a perfect line and came across the line with more speed and won by a narrow margin.
• Levi Collins got a little sideways out of the gate allowing Scott Lacey to get the early lead, it was just enough to give Lacey the buffer he needed.

Finals

30 & Over

• A repeat of the B-final from 2008 Van Winden vs Jenkins, the riders were dead even down the first straight. By the half way point Jenkins was just inches ahead but pulled away through the last half of the track to take the third for the day.
• Kelly and Anderson get an even snap, Anderson got the power down and pulled ahead, Kelly kept pushing his cruiser to it's limits, but it was Anderson who took the win, his third consecutive BSX win.

Open Men

• Siimaa got the snap but Collins had made up ground and was in front by the half way mark, small mistakes in the last two corners and Siinmaa took advantage and took line honours.
• Lacey and Horton seemed to be under pressure in their final. First Lacey looked like he was about to give the race away when he messed up the exit to the second corner, he dug deep and pushed Horton who made a mistake in the last corner and allowed Lacey to take a narow win.

Winners Challenge

• We thought we'd try something a little different this time around and put the two class winners against each other. Anderson did well, but Lacey seemed to take the track a lot faster and took the win.

About BSX
BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just three years the event has raised $11,678.45 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations.
